Day of action success!

February 9, 2010

On Saturday Tower Hamlets Respect had a successful day of campaigning in the community.

In the morning, Respect candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow, Councillor Abjol Miah, addressed demonstrators at the Crown Estates protest. He pledged to local residents that Respect would stand firm alongside them as they fight to prevent the sell-off of their estate.

At lunchtime, George Galloway MP was joined at Whitechapel Market by a dozen Respect supporters as he chatted to local people. Shoppers were keen to stop to talk to the MP to convey their concerns about housing and education and health cuts and to praise him for his stance against Islamophobia and the war in Afghanistan. We distributed our new Iraq inquiry leaflet calling for Tony Blair to stand trial for war crimes and it was very well received.

In the afternoon, both George Galloway and Abjol Miah addressed the launch meeting of the Yes to Mayor campaign at the Brady Centre in Whitechapel. Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and Labour MP Keith Vaz also spoke, as well as numerous community leaders and activists. George Galloway praised the local community for taking the initiative and forcing the council to call a referendum. Abjol Miah looked forward to a successful campaign and the creation of a democratic system in Tower Hamlets more in tune with the needs of local people. Respect supporters distributed hundreds of our leaflet ‘Mayor Wanted to Shake up the Council!’ The event was large, vibrant and diverse and Respect looks forward to playing our part in the campaign in the run up to May 6.

Many more days of action are planned and will be announced shortly.
